FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ADAPTATION OF SENIORS IN THE NURSING HOME

Abstract

The article examines factors influencing the adaptation of seniors in the Frýdek-Místek Nursing Home. The main objective is to identify key elements that affect how seniors adjust upon admission. Aging is also associated with reduced flexibility, making adaptation to new environments a critical concern for care providers. The study was conducted at the Frýdek-Místek Nursing Home using a qualitative approach. Six participants were purposively selected for semi-structured, individual interviews. Following transcription, the data were analyzed using open coding to identify initial concepts, followed by axial coding to establish relationships between categories. Findings reveal that adaptation is influenced by multiple interconnected factors. The senior’s family plays a crucial role, providing emotional support and continuity. Staff support and the approach of caregivers, particularly communication and interpersonal engagement, significantly affect adjustment. Additionally, the physical and social environment of the nursing home contributes to the ease with which seniors adapt, highlighting the importance of a welcoming, structured, and familiar setting. These results underscore the need for a holistic approach to admission processes, emphasizing family involvement, staff training in communication, and environmental considerations to promote successful adaptation.
